This message is for ALL stakeholders (Parents, Students, Staff, Visitors, Community members) who understand the challenges we face in preparing our young people for the 21st Century and beyond. As the Asst Principal for the Class of 2010, it is my goal to get back to the basics.  After much thought and some input from the “village” it was decided that we would focus on our A, B, and C’s.

First and foremost is our focus on ACADEMICS. We must ensure that our students are challenged intellectually with a culturally relevant curriculum that leaves no room for failure. Our staff must be given the necessary resources and professional development to support their efforts to tap into the potential in ALL students regardless of income, race, language, class, special needs, etc. I truly believe that ALL students can succeed and become productive, contributing members of society.

Our second and equally important focus will be BEHAVIOR. I want to hold ALL stakeholders accountable for helping to create and maintain a safe and positive learning environment.. For students it means saying NO to violence, drug use, lack of effort/motivation, bullying, and an overall poor attitude as it relates to education. For all others (Parents, Staff, Visitors, Community members) it means holding our young people accountable and working in partnership with each other to ensure success. Our behavior MUST reflect our ideals and vision for what is possible.

Third and perhaps the cornerstones for Academics and Behavior is the four C’s, CHARACTER, CONDUCT, CULTURE, and CLASS. Our students must exhibit the highest standard for each cornerstone while looking to the adults in the “village” to lead by example and to simply “Do the Right Thing.”

So as we quickly approach the new school year it is my hope that ALL who take the time to read my simple message understand the urgency in getting on board so that we can begin the difficult yet rewarding and life changing process that a 21st century education can provide. Are you ready to sail?

Mr. Mark Johnson
