Home Economics

5 Credits-Full Year Course

 

This course is designed for those students interested in foods and related subjects. Its open to any student who has had an introduction to Home Economics. An elementary study of nutrition is included as well as learning how to prepare simple foods for the family. The use of new foods in the marketplace, learning how to spend money wisely and to get along in varied social situations are included in the course. Class activities include guest speakers, teacher/student demonstrations, and class projects.

 

  • In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.
  • Through continual teacher observation of laboratory activities, students will demonstrate an understanding and observation of safely, sanitation and personal hygiene in a food-handling situation.
  • Through laboratory experiences, testing, student demonstrates and teacher observation, students will demonstrate the ability to interpret simple recipes, to use elementary cooking terms and techniques, and to operate simple food preparation equipment.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate effective use of time, money, energy and other resources in providing well-balanced meals for individual and family needs through class discussions, written assignments, tests and laboratory experiences.
  • Through class discussions, visual aids, reading assignments, and written projects, students will demonstrate knowledge of elementary nutrition, the new health Food Guide Pyramid and the relationship of dietary habits to overall health, lifestyle and well-being.

 

 

 

Introduction to Child Care Careers

5 Credits-Full Year

 

This course is directed toward preparing students for employment as paraprofessionals or aides in the care of young children in a day care center, nursery school, or pre-kindergarten program. A basic understanding of child development will be emphasized as well as the fundamentals of job training and skills needed for employment. Because of this course a student may decide to go into employment or continued education in child care.

 

·        In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

·        Consistent with teacher expectations, the student will be able to demonstrate and apply the skills and theories as established in Child Care and Development.

·        Through independent field work and research, students will explore and show basic knowledge of skills and characteristics of child care professional and show basic knowledge of the various career opportunities in the child care field.

·        Through role playing, visual aids, written assignments, and simulated conditions, students will display basic ability in the job search, application, and interview process.

 

 

 

Child Care and Development

5 Credits-Full Year

 

This course is a comprehensive course, which provides a background of knowledge of how children grow (birth to five years) as well as actual opportunities to work with small children in our own school laboratory twice a week. The student will observe the laboratory children and prepare written reports to further their ability to care for the changing needs of the child in addition to their regular classroom activities. Topics such as pre-natal development, child abuse, and mental/physical handicaps will be discussed. Students will also have opportunities to plan and participate in field trips of interest to the pre-school age child.

 

  • In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.
  • Through laboratory experience, written observations, visual aids, written tests, written assignments, and student/teacher interaction, the student will be able to identify stages of child development and distinguish growth patterns, pre-natal growth through age five.
  • Through laboratory experiences and written observations of pre-school children, the students will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge of the four major areas of growth and development consistent with teacher standards.
  • Through written assignments, teacher demonstration of visual aids, interaction with class members, teacher assignments and laboratory experiences the student will be able to apply principals of health and safety for children and will be able to recognize various factors and conditions which foster a wholesome environment for the child.
