Health Education 1
1.25 credits- 10 weeks Mandatory for Grade 9
Prerequisite- Not applicable
This course addresses the following topics: Personal
Health Care, including dieting nutrition, fitness, Mental Health, Respiratory
and Circulatory Emergencies.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the physical
and mental effects of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
- The student will understand and recognize the needs
for first aid and be able to perform the appropriate first aid procedure
based on these needs.
- The student will demonstrate the knowledge of the
affectors of personal health.
- The student will demonstrate the knowledge of the
affectors of mental health.
Driver
Education Theory
1.25 Credits- 10 Weeks Mandatory for Grade 10
This course will prepare youngsters to develop proper
attitudes and safe driving skills.
During the course the following areas are discussed: (1)
traffic rules and regulations, (2) basic automotive principals, and (3) an
appreciation of one’s personal responsibility for accident prevention and the
broader responsibility each of us has for furthering the safety of the
community.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will demonstrate an appreciation of
courtesy, cooperation, and the understanding of his fellow man that are
prerequisites for safe driving by taking notes in class, bringing the
textbook to class daily, and observing the classroom rules as established by
the class teacher.
- The student will complete the New Jersey Division of
Motor Vehicles High School Driver Examination.
- The student will identify orally or in writing at
least ten New Jersey traffic laws, regulations, or rules of the road.
- The student will identify orally or in writing the
specific procedure that must be followed to obtain a New Jersey driver’s
license and to register a motor vehicle.
- The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the legal
and practical necessities of insuring a vehicle, by listing the minimum New
Jersey insurance requirements.
- The student will identify orally or in writing at
least three factors to be considered when purchasing a motor vehicle.
- The student will identify orally or in writing at
least five factors that contribute to traffic accidents.
- The student will identify orally or in writing at
least five characteristics of a defensive driver.
- The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the
effects of alcohol upon driving by identifying orally or in writing at least
five characteristics of a drinking driver.
Dynamics of Health and Fitness
This full year course is a combination of
theory and physical activity. Students will explore nutrition,
cardiovascular function, weight management, strength, stress
management, exercise and other related health concepts in order to
maximize their personal health and fitness potential. It will
fulfill both the Heath and Physical Education requirement.
Health Education 3
1.25 Credits-10 Weeks Mandatory for Grade 11
Prerequisite- Health Education 1
This course addresses the following topics: Consumer
Health, Environment-Disease and Health, Aging, Dying and Death, Human
Sexuality/Mental Health.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will appraise health information and
identify false advertising.
- The student will identify similarities and differences
in physical and mental needs between the aged and the teenager.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of differences
given a unit of study of cultural and religious attitudes towards death.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the human
sexual system, sexual attitudes and behavior, marriage preparation, and
family planning.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the physical
and mental effects of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
Health
Education 4
1.25 Credits-10 week course Mandatory for Grade 12
Prerequisite- Health Education 3
This course is designed to present an in-depth study of
current health issues. Student are given an individual choice of topics.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will discuss and demonstrate knowledge
through written tests of some of the current critical health issues such as
rape, drugs, suicide, childbirth, abortion, and child abuse.
- The student will select and research in depth, a
current critical health issue and make an oral presentation consistent with
teacher expectation.
Physical
Education 1
3.75 Credits-Manditory for Grade 9
This course includes a daily program in calisthenics and
warm-up exercises. Students are introduced to basic skills in and participation
in team sports, including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball,
wrestling, and lacrosse. They are also introduced to basic skills and
participation in individual and dual sports including, cross-country, weight
training, archery, dance (folk and square) and track and field. Participation in
the AAHPER Physical Fitness Testing Program and
instructional swimming is expected. Emphasis is on exposure to many
activities and skill development.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will display an understanding and
appreciation of individual, dual and team sports through demonstration
consistent with teacher expectation.
- The student will develop the fundamental skills of
sports and demonstrate the various positions consistent with teacher
expectations.
- The student will display a sense of teamwork and
individual competition and an appreciation for both consistent with teacher
expectation.
- The student will develop organic fitness within
individual capacity by means of activities of a neuro-muscular nature.
- The student will develop and demonstrate desirable
health and safety habits through carefully supervised physical activities.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic
rhythms and floor patterns and develop a foundation of social interaction in
the process.

Prerequisite-Physical Education 1

The most unique quality of the elective program is
inclusion of student choice in determining their own program. The major emphasis
is encouragement in participation of lifetime activities, including: aerobics,
archery, badminton, Frisbee, golf, outdoor education, racquetball, slimnastics,
tennis, weights and conditioning and skiing. Team sports include: basketball,
floor hockey, football, softball, soccer, team handball, and volleyball on an
advanced level. Instructional swimming is the
only required activity and certification as American Red Cross Life Saving is
offered to qualified students.
- In order to master the proficiencies for this course,
attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order
to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from
student/teacher exchange.
- The student will demonstrate a progression in those
individual dual and team sports activities as developed in the ninth and
tenth grade programs through a teacher evaluation process.
- The student will develop and deepen an interest in
desirable recreational habits through knowledge of outdoor activities.
- The student will demonstrate the development of
physical fitness and neuro-muscular skills through activities such as
aerobic, slimnastics, and weight/conditioning to increase strength and
endurance.
The student will demonstrate continued knowledge and
appreciations of health and safety baits through carefully supervised physical
activities.
