Tutoring services are offered free to Hackensack High School students in grades 9-12. Adult volunteers from Hackensack and surrounding communities and student volunteers with high academic standing are the backbone of the program. Some students “drop – in” and ask for help while teachers, guidance counselors, and parents refer others. Tutoring sessions are arranged at a mutually convenient time for both tutor and tutee, but always occur during school hours, between 7:30AM and 3:45PM. Tutoring is on a one to one basis and is offered in the following subjects: math, algebra, geometry, calculus, biology, chemistry, integrated physical science, physics, English, history and ESL. Our program aims to help both the failing student and the high achiever, all who want to improve their grades. During the last school year, 2004-05, 106 registered for tutoring. We are sure to exceed that number this year. Several students will terminate their tutoring after an average of 10 sessions as they see their grades improve. Many recent arrivals from other countries are eagerly being tutored to improve their English skills.
Students from the high school who express an interest in working with young children can volunteer their time at various after school programs in the area and receive activity points for their service. Time is spent helping students with their homework, reading to them and playing games. The Drop – In Center emphasizes that the P.A.L. volunteers are role models to the young students and their words and actions are reflective of this. The centers include the four elementary schools in Hackensack, Maywood's Memorial School, The Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center, and the Keeling Manning Center. Nineteen students are involved in the program. Over the years the YMCA, which manages the after school programs in the Hackensack schools, has recognized P.A.L. volunteers with awards for their excellent work.
Parents of students in the elementary schools and middle school often inquire about tutoring services for their child. Members of the National Honor Society and students with high academic standing are informed of these inquiries and offer their services for pay. Parents of high school students are also informed of these opportunities and are asked to make their own inquiries if their child decides to take one of these positions as tutoring takes place not on school grounds but in private homes. Students receive between $15-20/hour.
Please contact Arlene Meyers, tutorial coordinator, at the Drop In Center with any questions on these programs.
