Computer Based Keyboarding 1

5 Credits-Full Year

Graduation Requirement

This course aims to develop a mastery of basic techniques of keyboarding by the touch method. In includes basic computer terminology, drills in learning the keyboard by touch, and learning to format reports, term papers, personal correspondence, and a resume. Composition skills at the keyboard are introduced. The course stresses good concentration, finger dexterity and the ability to follow directions. Minimum speed and accuracy standards must be met.

This course is a prerequisite for Computer-based Keyboarding 2, Computer Operations, and Word Processing.

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate through touch keyboarding the ability to meet speed and accuracy requirements as determined by the department.

The student will demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to use the technology of the computer software.

The student will demonstrate the ability to: (a) center all material vertically and horizontally, (b) correctly format in block form personal and business letters, (c) correctly format a term paper including references and bibliography, and (d) format a resume.

Computer Applications

2.5 Credits-Half Year

Computer Applications is an accelerated one-semester course designed to provide students with basic fundamentals of keyboarding through the touch method. It includes an introduction to computer terminology, drills to develop accuracy and speed, and guidelines for formatting academic reports and personal correspondence. It will be taught so as to enable students to be proficient on the Micro Soft program Word.

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate though touch keyboarding, the ability to meet speed and accuracy requirements as determined by the department.

The student will demonstrate the ability to (a) center material, (b) correctly format academic reports and personal correspondence, and (c) use the basic word processing functions of Micro Soft Word.

Computer Based Keyboarding 1/Money Management

5 Credits-Full Year

Alternative to meet the graduation requirement for Computer Based Keyboarding 1

Students who have already met the Keyboarding requirement, may elect to take Money management for one semester.

This is a full year course with Keyboarding 1 taught during one semester and Money Management during the other semester.

Computer based Keyboarding 1 is an accelerated one semester course designed to provide students with basic fundamentals of keyboarding through the touch method. It includes an introduction to computer terminology, drills to develop accuracy and speed, and guidelines for formatting academic reports and personal correspondence.

Money Management is designed to teach students the important basics about personal finance and managing their money. It includes: budget and keeping personal records; banking services such as savings and checking accounts and the use of an ATM; credit procedures which include cost of credit, types of credit, advantages and disadvantages; consumer rights and responsibilities; and career choices, payroll, employee benefits and incentives.

Minimal Proficiency Requirements:

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate though touch keyboarding the ability to meet speed and accuracy requirements as determined by the department.

The student will demonstrate knowledge and the ability to use the technology of the computer and the software programs.

The student will demonstrate the ability to (a) center material, (b) correctly format academic reports and personal correspondence, and (c) use basic word processing function keys.

The student will demonstrate the ability to analyze and understand career planning, the budgeting process, credit management and risks, the purpose of personal record keeping and consumer rights and responsibilities.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of bank terminology, the advantages and disadvantages of available banking services, and the preparation of checks, deposit slips, checkbook registers, bank reconciliations and the use of automated teller machines.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the need and purpose of savings, evaluate type of saving options, and how to compute interest on savings.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of buying on credit, the types of available credit, how to obtain credit, how to keep credit records, how credit laws affect the consumer, and comparing methods of computing finance changes.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the methods of financing an insuring an automobile and how to select the right car, as well as financial coasts of owning an automobile.

Computer Based Keyboarding 1 / Marketing

5 Credits-Full Year

Alternative to meet the graduation requirement for computer based keyboarding 1

Marketing is designed to provide students with a general background in the concepts of what marketing is and how it relates to product distribution. Students will be familiarized with the skills necessary to develop and sell products. Hands-on experiences include a project to design, promote, and distribute a simulated product they have developed. Students will also experience basic entrepreneurship by being involved in the operation of the school store through product selection and promotions.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of research activities, problems, decision-making requirements, and promotions related to product creation and ultimate distribution.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of product development from inception to the hands of the consumer.

The student will demonstrate the ability to recognize the psychological impacts of the branding, packing, and labeling of products.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship through hands-on participation in the school store.

ESL Computer Based Keyboarding 1

5 Credits-Full Year

This course is designed for students who have a limited profienciey in English. The students will gain mastery of the basic techniques of keyboarding by the touch method. Students will learn to format basic reports and simple correspondence.

This course stresses good concentration, finger dexterity, development of language skills, and he ability to follow directions in the target language. Minimum speed and accuracy standards must be met. This course is a prerequisite for Computer based Keyboarding 1 and Computer based Keyboarding 2.

The student will demonstrate the knowledge and ability to identify the various parts and functions of the computer based keyboard.

The student will demonstrate touch master of the alphabet and numeric keyboarding.

The student will demonstrate the ability for format simple letters, reports and documents.

The student will demonstrate the ability to apply the rules of grammar and punctuation to keyboarding material.

The student will demonstrate the ability to meet speed and accuracy requirements as determined by the department.

Computer Based Keyboarding 2/Word Processing

5 Credits-Full Year

Prerequisite- Computer Based Keyboarding 1

This couse is a continuation of Computer Based Keyboarding 1 designed to improve the keyboarding skills of students. The course includes reinforcement of basic skills and drills for improvement based on individual needs.

The production of personal and business projects, which includes letters, reports, memorandums, tables, announcements, and a resume, is stressed. Proofreading and editing skills are reinfores with an emphasis on producing mailable copy. Composition skills at the keyboard are developed.

Students learn to apply problem solving and critical thinking skills while completing projects.

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate the ability to produce personal and business reports, letters, memorandums, tables, and announcements in an acceptable format.

The student will demonstrate the ability to proofread, edit, and make problem solving decisions in order to produce mailable copy.

The student will demonstrate the ability to produce a resume in an acceptable format.

The student will demonstrate the ability to meet speed and accuracy requirements as determined by the department.

Cisco Systems Networking

5 Credits-Full Year

Cisco Systems Networking is a full year course designed to provide students with knowledge of networking. The course is offered in conjunction with Cisco Systems. It includes an introduction to computer networking and is the first half of a two year program designed to enable the student to pass the Cisco Systems Networking Associate exam. The student will gain an understanding of how networks function and will experience hand on construction of a computer network.

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate through hands on lab work the ability to construct and operate a computer network to the satisfaction of the teacher.

The student will demonstrate the ability to (a) center material, (b) correctly format academic reports and personal correspondence, and (c) use the basic word processing functions of Micro Soft Word.

Computer Technology / College Bound Students

5 Credits- Full Year

Prerequisite-Computer Based Keyboarding 1

Students will learn to effectively utilize the computer in fulfilling high school, future college and career assignments by training in word processing, database, spreadsheets, graphics and computer utilities. A Microsoft integrated software package is used. Students will have opportunity to use ergonomically designed keyboards.

Students will be instructed in the use of the Internet for research projects. Headache … bummed… at work… leave it or w/e… visit if u want

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate the ability to perform the following specialized computer procedures: use a word processing program to compose letters, term papers, resumes and reports; merge shell letters for colleges and job finding; compile data from which reports can be prepared; prepare research projects in any field; use spread sheets; translate data into graphic form; insert graphs into text materials.

The student will demonstrate the ability to understand computer functions, saving and deleting documents, creating directories/folders, moving and renaming documents.

The student will demonstrate the ability to use the Internet to do research projects in their academic classes.

The student will demonstrate an awareness of the various careers that utilize computer operations.

Advanced Computer Technology/ College Bound Students

5 Credits-Full Year

Prerequisite-Computer Operations

Students learn the advanced techniques of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access. Research techniques in using the Internet are emphasized. Students learn to use E-mail, the digital camera, and a scanner.

Specialized procedures in formatting reports, business correspondence, resumes, newsletters, and flyers are stretched with the emphasis on critical thinking and decision making.

Students learn to create databases, perform searches, and merge data, including the creating of mailing lists. They learn the more advanced techniques of creating spreadsheets, including graphs and merging of documents.

Students further develop their computer literacy in the accessing of programs and maintain folders/directories and files (including creating, deleting, renaming, moving, and copying).

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate the ability to use the Internet in researching information for projects and the creation and utilization of E-mail.

The student will demonstrate the ability to create a database, use search techniques, and create appropriate reports.

The student will demonstrate the ability to create spreadsheets, utilize appropriate mathematical formulas, construct graphs, and perform merges.

The student will demonstrate the ability to utilize software to format reports, resumes, and correspondences; create flyers, and utilize desktop publishing features.

The student will demonstrate his/her computer literacy through file and document management.

Accounting

5 Credits-Full Year

This course studies the basic principles of recording financial information and practice in the construction, classification, and interpretation of accounts, financial reports, and statements. Comparisons are made in the methods of handling records. Preparation of individual tax forms will be introduced. Basic computer operations and the use of accounting software will be introduced.

Subject matter in this course forms the background for further study in the fields of Accounting, Business Administration, Law and Finance. A student may also be able to enter an Accounting Clerk position upon completion of this course.

Through testing and completion of all workbook and supplemental assignments, the student will demonstrate the ability to analyze, record, and interpret the steps in the accounting cycle for service and merchandising business.

The student will demonstrate the ability to perform specialized accounting procedures utilizing special journals, subsidiary ledgers, and worksheets.

The student will demonstrate a understanding of the basic banking functions, preparing checks, deposit slips, bank reconciliations, etc.

The student will demonstrate an awareness of basic accounting computer software.

The student will demonstrate an awareness of careers in accounting and related fields.

College Prep Accounting

5 Credit-Full Year

The fundamentals of Accounting are taught in an accelerated format using a college-level text. This course studies the principles of recording financial information and practice in the construction, classification, and interpretation of accounts, financial reports, and statements with the emphasis on analysis and decision making.

Students will have hands n experience in preparing individual tax forms. Current tax issues will be highlighted. Included is a study of the Stock Market and its impact on business and individuals. Basic computer operations and the use of accounting software will be introduced.

Subject matter in the course forms the background for further study in the fields of Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, and Law.

Through testing and completion of all workbook and supplemental assignements, the student will demonstrate the ability to analyze, record, and interpret the steps in the accounting cycle for service and merchandising businesses.

The student will demonstrate the ability to perform specialized accounting procedures utilizing special journals, subsidiary ledgers, worksheets, and comparative financial statements.

The student will demonstrate the ability to successfully solve unusual accounting cases and make managerial decisions.

The student will demonstrate ability to use basic accounting computer software.

The student will demonstrate the awareness of careers in accounting and related fields.

Law

2.5 Credits per semester- 1 or 2 semesters

This is an elective subject for students in any curriculum. Emphasis is on the legal aspects of property ownership, buying goods and services, driving responsibility, teenage liability in torts and crimes, contracts, product liability, employment contracts and protection of employees. Discussing current legal concepts, unusual cases, legal news and group projects helps students to make the connection between the academic world and the world outside the classroom. Students will discuss topics with guest speakers from law enforcement agencies and law firms. There is a field trip to the Superior Court. Students participate in a mock trial.

The student will demonstrate the ability to explain the litigation process and pertinent legal vocabulary.

The student will demonstrate the ability to identify correctly the legal questions involved in case histories and the arguments for each side, and make decisions consistent with the legal concepts taught in the course.

Utilizing newspapers, legal reports, courtroom visits, and resource people, the student will successfully make an oral presentation indicating an understanding of the citizen’s legal rights and obligations.

The student will demonstrate the ability to debate the adversary during a role play assignment or a part in a mock trial.

The student will develop knowledge of various law-related careers.

Cooperative Education

15 Credits-Full Year

For 12th grade students with approval of Program Coordinator

Cooperateive Education Programs are for work-bound or college-bound senior high school students. Students are provided with opportunities to explore and develop career goals, to experience actual on-the-job training and to become aware of career progression, while earning 15 credits toward graduation.

The program includes a combination of regularly scheduled part-time paid employment and job-related classroom instruction pertaining to the world of work. The students attend school during the morning hours and report immediately to work in the afternoon at sites such as financial institutions, medical and legal offices, hotels, CPA firms, retail stores, and major corporations. This program is planned and supervised by a qualified teacher-coordinator working with school personnel, parents, students, and employers.

The following two Cooperative Education Programs are available:

Cooperative Business Education

This course provides a practical experience in the workings of the business world and in the interaction of workers in an office setting. The subject matter will be presented in a manner designed to accomplish the development of responsible attitudes and work habits. Units taught will adhere to individual instruction based on defined student career goals. The course outline may be adjusted throughout the year to meet the needs of the students as it appeals to their particular work sites and employers.

Cooperative Industrial Education

CIE provides a practical experience in the workings of the business world and in the interaction of workers in areas such as auto repair, retail sales, hotel sevices, food distribution, printing, electrical supply, engineering, and nursing home care. The subject matter will be presented in a manner designed to accomplish the development of responsible attitudes and work habits. Units taught will adhere to individual instruction based on defined student career goals.

They are instructed in exploring related jobs which lead to careers, understating the importance of industrial safety, developing a major awareness of good work ethics, and acquiring an understanding of basic survival skills needed for interdependent living. The course outline may be adjusted to their particular work sites and employers.

In order to master the proficiencies for this course, attendance, consistent with Board of Education policy, is required in order to demonstrate skills, social interaction, and the inter-play of ideas from student/teacher exchange.

The student will demonstrate a knowledge of job finding techniques which include reading and interpreting classified job ads; enlisting personal resources for locating job openings, identifying differences between public and private agencies; prepairing acceptable job resumes; correctly filling out employment applications; demonstrating the preparation needed for a job interview; and being interviewed by prospective employers.

The student will demonstrate through required activities and testing a knowledge of the following safety rules regarding: fire prevention, sanitation, electricity, personal protections, body mechanics, and first aid.

The student will demonstrate the ability to keep a job in an approved work station by acceptable attendance, punctuality, job responsibility, job performance, adaptability according to and including the New Jersey State Cooperative Vocational Education Training Agreement and mandated Cooperative Education Rules and Regulations required by the State and subscribed to by the Hackensack Board of Education.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the difference between voluntary and involuntary deductions; the Federal Insurance Contributions Act; State Unemployment Insurance; Disability Insurance; Federal and State Withholding Tax; and voluntary compliance with Federal and State Income Tax Laws.

The student will demonstrate a knowledge of various careers, particularly as they relate to education and training; career growth; working conditions, rewards and lifestyles that those careers provide or need.

The student will demonstrate the ability to assumes the specific classroom and job responsibilities of the specific program in which he/she is enrolled.

The student will demonstrate the ability to develop job entry and adaptability skills which will provide the background and knowledge to retain a job under changing economic conditions and technological development.

The student will demonstrate a knowledge of record management.

The student will demonstrate the importance of setting work priorities in job assignments.

The student will develop an awareness of human relations concepts and apply them in the classroom and on the job.
