Art I

Art I is an exploratory course with an introduction to various media. Techniques in the use of pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, pastels, tempera, and acrylic paints are introduced. Students will learn that Arts I more than a “pretty picture”. Emphasis on thinking skills and creative problem solving is discovered through a variety of projects based on the elements and principals of art. For the beginning and advanced artist a sketch/idea book is encouraged and recommended for the recording of original ideas.

Art II

Prerequisites for this course are Art I and a strong desire to continue an artistic journey.

Students will begin to independently explore solutions to teacher-directed assignments and problems. With the fundamentals of art theory and techniques already in place, students will acquire fluency and a sense of self-esteem necessary to produce art. Art history and appreciation are also presented through various multi-media clips, selected readings and field trips.

AP Art Studio

AP Art Studio is a 10 credit/double period class which provides an excellent opportunity for self-motivated and disciplined students to explore the visual arts in a way seldom offered on a high school level. Students will have the opportunity to develop mastery in concepts, composition, and the execution of 2D design. Projects and directives are designed to help students think about art on a sophisticated level. The art of “critique” will also be developed. Throughout the year, students work towards a concentration, which may be submitted to and evaluated by the College Board for possible college credit. Independent research may be required.
