Native Spanish I 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation or qualifying placement test score

This course is designed for second and third generation Latino students or native Spanish speakers who need to further develop their heritage language literacy skills. This course follows the guidelines of The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) for World Languages and the WIDA Standards for Language Arts in Spanish. It helps students to develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

It offers students of Hispanic heritage ample opportunities to study Spanish formally in an academic setting in the same way native English-speaking students study English language arts. The course allows students to develop an appreciation for their language and cultural heritage, while fostering the acquisition of literacy and cognitive academic skills. Students enhance their Spanish vocabulary, and learn to discern the different registers of language usage. Instructional goals focus on grammar, reading and writing, vocabulary development, exposure to the language and culture and its communities, and consciousness-raising activities about language and identity.

 

Pre AP Native Spanish II 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisites: Successful completion of SFSS teacher recommendation, qualifying placement test or I score

Spanish for Spanish Speakers II (SFSS II) is designed for second and third generation Latino students or native Spanish speakers who have taken and passed SFSS I or scored accordingly on the Spanish for Native Speakers Placement Test. SFSS II follows the guidelines of The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) for World Languages and the WIDA Standards for Language Arts in Spanish. It helps students to develop and challenge their abilities in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Grammar, lexical, syntactical, and essay-writing skills introduced in SFSS I are further developed in this course. 

This course offers students of Hispanic heritage ample opportunities to study Spanish formally in an academic setting in the same way native English-speaking students study English language arts. The course allows students to develop the language they bring from home further, to learn more about their language and cultural heritage, and to develop Spanish academic language skills. Students not only enhance their Spanish vocabulary, but they also learn to discriminate among the different registers of language usage. Instructional goals focus on grammar, reading, reading comprehension, speaking, writing, vocabulary development, and on the appreciation of major literary works, both prose and poetry, of the Spanish-speaking world and Latino literature in the United States . Students will develop skills, which will enable them produce writing in various formats and genres.

 

Pre AP Native Spanish III 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of SFSS II, t eacher recommendation or qualifying placement test score

This course is designed for second and third generation Latino students who have taken and passed SFSS II or scored accordingly on the Spanish for Native Speakers Placement Test. The course targets students who have been formally exposed to listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish and need to improve their skills in their native language. SFSS III follows the guidelines of The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) for World Languages and the WIDA Standards for Language Arts in Spanish. It includes a thorough review of the grammar rules and the orthography of Spanish. Students will read and write extensively, give oral presentations, and participate in debates, all while learning about the fundamental grammatical structures of Spanish and the many ways Spanish can be used in both formal and informal settings. Students will be exposed to major literary works, both prose and poetry, of the Spanish-speaking world and Latino literature in the United States .

 

Spanish I 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: N/A

Spanish 1 is an audio-lingual approach to language learning designed to teach beginning level students, grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum World Language Standards. It is a course in which students will develop skills in listening, speaking, etc. The course is designed to help students understand and appreciate the language etc. The goals for Level 1 are the acquisition of basic vocabulary skills, good pronunciation, listening comprehension and development of conversational skills.

 

Spanish II 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisites: Spanish 1

Spanish II is an audio-lingual approach to language learning designed to teach beginning level students, grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum World Language Standards. It is a continuing course in which students will continue to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Spanish I or the equivalent level knowledge and achievement is a pre-requisite for this course. Additionally, the course is designed to help students deepen their understanding and appreciation for the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries. The goals for Level 2 are the continued acquisition of vocabulary skills, good pronunciation, listening comprehension, and development of conversational skills as well as increased fluency in writing and comprehension in reading.

 

Spanish III 5 Credits - Full Year
Prerequisites: Spanish 2

This course expands and strengthens the students' control of the Spanish language. It builds on the foundation developed in Spanish I and Spanish 2 . Students will develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. During this course, students develop their mastery of the language and are able to express themselves using more complex grammar and vocabulary. The course is based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for World languages. . Much emphasis is placed upon different tenses of the language, so that students not only feel comfortable dealing with Spanish grammar but also deepen their understanding and appreciation for the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries.

 

Pre AP Spanish II 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or qualifying placement test score

This course is designed for students who intend to take Pre AP Spanish 3. It follows the Spanish 1 introduction with an accelerated study of the language and greater emphasis on authentic communication, reading and writing. Although grammar intensive, this course also offers students opportunities to analyze short narratives and further develop an understanding of the Spanish-speaking world. This will be conducted mostly in Spanish.

 

Pre AP Spanish III 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or qualifying placement test score

This course is designed for students who intend to take AP Spanish. It offers students as much exposure as is possible, to authentic materials that will address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students will deepen their understanding of the language through analysis of literary selections and contemporary topics. They will demonstrate the ability to summarize and write in various formats, including well-developed paragraphs, literary response items, and expository essays. Units of study and projects will further offer students opportunities to explore Spanish culture and language.

 

AP Spanish Language 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Pre AP Spanish 3, teacher recommendation or qualifying placement test score 

Advanced Placement Spanish Language is a college-level course conducted completely in Spanish. It follows the guidelines and requirements of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for World Languages (NJCCCS). Students are encouraged to practice the target language in their daily classroom interactions with their teacher and classmates. They are also exposed to authentic and level-appropriate reading materials, audio, and video recordings. The course provides ample opportunities for exposure to the world of literature and current events of Spanish-speaking countries through authentic written texts. A thorough review of the major grammatical, syntactical, and linguistic aspects of the Spanish language is conducted in this course. In order for students to enroll in this course they must have completed Pre-AP Spanish III with a B+ or higher grade and have their Spanish teacher recommendation. Students of Hispanic heritage who demonstrate a very good command of intermediate-level Spanish in our Placement Test may also enroll.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand conversations, oral presentations, newspapers and magazines, formal and informal letters, essays, instructions and directions, Internet articles, fiction and non-fiction stories, and radio and television programs;
  • Express themselves orally using appropriate language to persuade, argue, inquire, and describe;
  • Express themselves properly in a wide variety of styles using appropriate strategies for different audiences;
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the linguistic and cultural richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

Students in the Advanced Placement Spanish class are expected to take the AP Spanish Examination administered in May. Successful performance in this examination will give students college credits.

College Credit: Many colleges grant credit hours for beginner Spanish level courses to students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam. Check with each individual college for additional information.

 

AP Spanish Literature 5 Credits – Full Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of AP Spanish Language or teacher recommendation

This Advanced Placement Spanish Literature course is a college-level course conducted completely in Spanish, and students are expected to use the language in their interactions with the teacher and their peers as well as in all class activities and assignments. All of the works of the official AP Spanish Literature reading list are included in this course. The major movements in Hispanic literature from medieval times through the current literary trends are studied and discussed. Through reading, critical analysis, discussions, comparison, and contrast students transcend the boundaries of national literatures and learn about the ties that exist between Peninsular and Latin American literature. Literature is not taught as an end in itself, but as a means through which we can learn many aspects of Hispanic studies -from everyday customs and traditions to historical and social values and principles, as well as diverse points of view. In order for students to enroll in this course they must have taken and passed successfully AP Spanish Language SFSS III or receive approval from the AP Spanish Literature teacher.

At the end of this course, students are expected to have learned:

  • The major literary movements, writers, trends, and ideas that have shaped the Spanish and Latin American peoples;
  • The tools and techniques of literary analysis;
  • The necessary vocabulary and terminology to engage in discussions about literary criticism both orally and in writing;
  • To analyze critically the form and content of literary works, both prose and poetry;
  • To understand how a literary work relates to the author's life, activities, and aspirations as well as to the socio-cultural and historical context to which it belongs.
