Italian I 5 Credits – Full Year This course is designed for students who are interested in a basic knowledge of the Italian language. It offers an introduction to Italian language and culture. The class addresses basic vocabulary and elementary grammar imbedded in thematic units and cultural vignettes. Students will be exposed to the language in its written as well as spoken forms.
Italian II 5 Credits – Full Year This course offers a continuation of Italian I with increasing emphasis on speaking, reading and writing in the target language. It is designed to expand students' knowledge and competency in Italian. Grammar, vocabulary and basic conversation are reviewed and reinforced.
Pre AP Italian II 5 Credits – Full Year This course is designed for students who intend to take Pre Ap Italian 3. It follows the Italian 1 introduction with an accelerated study of the language and greater emphasis on reading and writing. Although grammar intensive, this course also entails analysis of select literature and cultural aspects of the Italian speaking world. This class is conducted almost exclusively in Italian.
Pre AP Italian III 5 Credits – Full Year This course is designed for students who intend to take AP Italian 4. Lessons and course content provide as much exposure as is possible, to authentic materials that will address the listening and reading comprehension skills of each student. Daily opportunities will also be afforded to practice and to perfect the speaking and writing skills of each student. Classes are designed to offer practice in each of the four target skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Units of study will further explore Italian culture, conversation and journalism.
AP Italian 5 Credits – Full Year A college-level course, this class is designed for students who intend to study Italian at the college level. It provides as much exposure as is possible, to authentic materials that will address the listening and reading comprehension skills of each student. Daily opportunities will also be afforded to practice and to perfect the speaking and writing skills of each student. The first semester is designed such that each week follows a similar routine, which guarantees practice in each of the four target skills. In the second semester the focus shifts to the AP Exam. While select exercises continue throughout the school year, by mid-March the class will engage in regular practice of previous AP Exams and similar timed testing materials. Students in AP Italian are expected to take the AP Italian Examination administered in May. Successful performance on this examination will give students college credits. College Credit: Many colleges grant credit hours for beginner Italian level courses to students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam. Check with each individual college for additional information.
