INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Hackensack High School and the Department of Athletics. Our pledge is to provide your child with an experience based on the most up to date athletic trends, philosophies, and methods. Our coaches are dedicated to providing each and every athlete an experience that will have a positive impact upon not only in high school but also throughout their lives.
While winning is the ultimate goal of every interscholastic squad, we are dedicated to providing your child with a successful experience that should: impact positively on their grade point average, increase the development of a more mature decision making ability, provide day-to-day interaction with positive role models, and enhance the development of friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
It is also important to note that we bring together student athletes from four communities. This combination will present a challenge to many student athletes, who may have excelled in their hometown athletic programs. This is normal and the competition helps to promote a successful program. At some point every athlete has to recognize we must produce teams that can compete at the interscholastic level of athletics. Ours is not a recreation program that guarantees equal playing time for all participants.
The backbone of the interscholastic program is the athlete’s commitment to the team. Modern American lifestyles make it very difficult for an individual to be focused on any one activity. Too often teenagers take a shotgun approach to participation, going after one thing without finishing another. Adults understand that we simply cannot undertake all that interests us. We must make choices that limit our undertakings to those things we can actually accomplish. Athletics provide a real life experience where the students learn how to focus by making choices. To that end, it is expected that every athlete be committed to attending every practice and game.
We look at this experience as being a partnership between parents, athletes and coaches.
